The appearance of Dr. Johnson is arguably the most serious of several anachronisms in Blackadder the Third. The series is set in the Regency period (1810 to 1820), and Johnson died in 1784. He is said to be working on his "groundbreaking dictionary", which in reality was first published in 1755 – seven years before the birth of Prince George, who is known throughout the series as the Prince Regent.
